A couple of us guys were talking about the priesthood of believers this morning, and how our typical understanding of priests tangles up our understanding of our priestly calling.
Priests typically act as an intermediary between people and a diety. We don't need that here on earth any more, as Jesus is our high priest, and we are called to be the priesthood of believers.
1 Peter 2:9 says "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
So, as Christ followers, we don't need earthly priests to connect us to God, but we do need brothers and sisters who can disciple us in our walk with God and we offer the same to others.
So what about this priest assignment? Well first off, we act as a priest offering our lives as living sacrifices. That's awesome in itself.
But what we stumbled across this morning is we are priests to those who don't know God, rather than those that do.
Imagine ourselves on Kingdom assignment, bringing peace and love to our community in the name of Jesus.
We are a priest to our community, our coworkers, our friends and family. We must make time to be present with those on this earth that need to be connected to God.
We must take time to listen, to counsel, to resolve conflict using Biblical truth, to be a demonstration of God's love. First, we must be present, rather than sequestered in our houses or church gatherings.
Have you accepted your role as a priest to those far from God? Are you getting out among those who need to get connected to God?
