We changed up our schedule this weekend to get a little more moved in. I needed to get the garage set up so I can find tools and things, and Cynthia went about setting up an office so we could find and pay our bills!
In the garage, I discovered the old, disconnected garage door opener still worked (I bumped the button and off it went). So I got a little enamored with fixing the garage door (sagging and broken), and firing up the opener.
In the process, the motor's limit switches weren't quite right and it tried to close a closed door. The motor started smoking, and Cynthia hollered "unplug it!" After making sure we hadn't started the garage on fire, I left defeated, only to find the power out a few moments later.
I checked the breakers to the garage; all good. I worked upstream, and checked all the house. Everything was off! I wandered around trying to figure out what was wrong with no luck.
What is the chance a power outage hit just as I smoked the garage door opener? The neighbors across the street had power. The next door neighbors were gone...
I got on my phone and searched for a number for the power company and after navigating their extensive voce mail system, learned there was in fact an unexplained wide spread power outage starting at our street. Cynthia: "My gosh, what have you done, Alan? That's some powerful garage door opener."
I will be changing to modern technology. That last thing I need is this garage door opener closing down on something or someone!
